First World War Centenary
Get involved in the commemorations by:
- attending an event
- researching your own family links with the war
- contributing to one of our local history wikis
- starting a project in your own school or community group.
The Local History and Archives centre has set up three wikis to help people explore and document the boroughs links to the First World War:
Somme100 Film
In September 2016, Lewisham Local History and Archives Centre took part in the Somme100 FILM project to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.
We screened the silent 1916 documentary, The Battle of the Somme, at the Broadway Theatre in Catford.
To accompany the footage, the Angel Orchestra played a score by composer Laura Rossi.
Schools' projects
Professor of Twentieth Century History at Goldsmiths, University of London, Professor Richard Grayson has worked with The Hemel Hempstead School to create, through recorded and transcribed interviews, an internet archive of memories of war which would otherwise be lost.
There is also a guide for schools in which Professor Grayson explains how to adapt the project to your own school or community.
Researching family links
To mark the centenary, the Imperial War Museum is creating Lives of the First World War to help reveal 8 million stories of men and women from Britain and the Commonwealth.
