Lewisham residents urged to follow social distancing guidelines in parks

Residents in Lewisham are being urged this weekend to keep following government advice on social distancing and help ensure the borough’s parks stay open.

The borough has 45 parks and open spaces which can be used for daily exercise — a lifeline for families and those who do not have access to a garden or outdoor space.

Over the Bank Holiday weekend, despite the temptation of sunny weather, the overwhelming majority of residents followed the guidance to limit the spread of coronavirus by staying at home and only going out to exercise or shop for vital supplies. A team from Lewisham Council worked alongside police to keep everyone safe and ensure the parks stayed open.

Cllr Sophie McGeevor, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said she was hugely grateful to everyone for following the rules and urged park users to keep up the good work this weekend.

It’s vital that we all do our bit to prevent the spread of coronavirus by following the government advice on social distancing.

“Going outside is good for mental and physical wellbeing, so keeping our parks open for the people who need them most is vital. If people fail to follow the advice, it could lead to stricter restrictions and parks being closed.”

The social distancing rules are:

  • Stay as local as possible
  • Keep at least two metres from others
  • Don’t gather in groups
  • Only use your local park once a day to walk, run or cycle.
