Major new cycling route for Deptford Church Street

Lewisham Council today officially launched a new fully segregated cycle route along Deptford Church Street.

(L-R) Councillor Louise Krupski, Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport and Climate; Will Norman, London's Walking and Cycling Commissioner; Lewisham’s Mayor Brenda Dacres

Guests at this morning’s unveiling ceremony included Lewisham’s Mayor Brenda Dacres and Deputy Mayor Louise Krupski, Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport and Climate Action; and London's Walking & Cycling Commissioner Will Norman. The route was created with funding from Transport for London (TfL).

Consultation was extensive and ran for seven weeks with about 300 people providing responses. Amendments were then made taking into consideration comments and suggestions received through the consultation to form the final designs.

The new cycle run from Creek Road (A200) to Deptford Broadway/Deptford Bridge and links up with existing cycle routes. This means cyclists can now ride into central London on cycleways fully segregated from traffic.

The lane is separated from traffic using kerbs and flexible posts, so cyclists have their own space. Bus stops have been redesigned with bus stop bypasses, crossings and tactile paving to help everyone, including people with visual impairments.

Rain gardens near bus stops have been created to help with drainage and reduce flooding. Junctions at Coffey Street, Giffin Street and Reginald Road now have traffic lights for safer crossings. Streetlights have been upgraded and moved where needed, and barriers near Creekside and Giffin Street have been repaired.

Councillor Louise Krupski, Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport and Climate Action said:

“The new cycle route on Deptford Church Street is a fantastic addition to our borough and a real game-changer for active travel. It’s safer, greener and designed for everyone - whether you’re cycling to work, school or just enjoying a ride.

“This isn’t just about infrastructure; it’s about healthier streets, cleaner air and giving people confidence to travel sustainably. Our Active Travel Strategy is all about making walking, wheeling, scooting, and cycling the first choice for everyday journeys.”

Will Norman, London's Walking and Cycling Commissioner, said:

"Cycling in London is soaring, with over 1.5m bike trips being made every day. Londoners feel much safer cycling on our expanding network of bike lanes, so I’m delighted to open this new cycleway in Deptford which will make a huge difference for those cycling in the area.

“The Mayor and I will keep investing in high-quality cycleways to reduce road danger, make journeys easier and enable even more Londoners to choose sustainable ways to travel as we continue building a safer, greener, better London for everyone.”
