Loved hospitality business open new venue in Brockley

Haleena and Daniel from Mauby are one of the many black-owned, high street businesses who have now opened their doors after receiving one of our affordable workspace grants.

Heleena and Daniel

The pair started the much-loved business in a family kitchen in southeast London, and now have opened up their latest location, Mauby in Brockley.

Mauby (also known as Jerk Off BBQ) have been serving incredible West Indian cuisine and running impactful community events for close to a decade. Their passion for cooking started at home with family and is always the centre and heart of their recipes.

"At that time there wasn't many food brands of West Indian food, we felt like there was a gap in the market. Southeast London is mostly dominated by Jamaican restaurants, so we were trying to represent all the other islands.”

The pair started as market traders at Lee Gate food market in 2016 and then established themselves at Catford Food Market for the next two and half years. Here they developed their ideas and gained attention from the community. As well, they began doing restaurant and bar pop ups, and festivals.

After leaving the market and pop-ups, they found a permanent place in Deptford where they spent the next four years – including pivoting to a delivery service during the pandemic.

Unfortunately, the permanent space they had in Deptford went up for sale, so Daniel and Haleena found themselves searching for a new space for their business.

With the help of the Council’s affordable workspace grant programme, the pair were able to use a £10,000 grant to help them open their new doors in Brockley.

Mauby’s space is filled with furniture and décor they almost entirely built and fit out themselves. It is a welcoming space which will allow them to build on their already impressive business and community offering.

When reflecting on what the new space has enabled, they said:

“Being an established place and having a longer lease is good. We like to plan a lot of events like anti-racism events so now we have the place to plan those soon and will do even more.

And we get approached by a lot of other business owners around and or self-employed people requesting to collaborate.”

About the affordable workspace programme

We have invested nearly £1million across Lewisham to enhance our high streets, workspaces and local business community.

Our workspace grant programme encouraged local businesses to improve or create spaces that would either help their business, generate new opportunities for the borough and or attract people to work locally.
