Landmark active travel strategy approved

A new landmark active travel strategy, which will help ensure Lewisham is one of the easiest and safest places to walk and cycle in the capital, has been approved.

Shaped by extensive public consultation and stakeholder engagement, the strategy aims to deliver a healthier, greener, and more accessible Lewisham over the next decade.

Public support is strong and seven out of ten survey respondents agreed with the Council’s vision and long-term goals, while 63% said it would help them travel more actively.

Residents called for more street crossings, cycle stands and hangars, cycle lanes, larger pedestrian zones, traffic calming and reduction, improved footpaths, and the removal of vehicles parked on pavements. Listening and responding to this feedback, the Council is delivering walking and cycling schemes throughout Lewisham.

Key priorities identified include road safety improvements, traffic reduction, and better crossings and cycle lanes.

Implementation will be phased, with projects integrated alongside other transport programmes such as Healthy Neighbourhoods and road resurfacing.

Promoting walking and cycling is an important part of Lewisham’s Climate Action Plan and will contribute to reducing carbon emissions alongside improving air quality and delivering health benefits.

Councillor Louise Krupski, Cabinet Member for Climate Action, Transport and Environment said:

“Our Active Travel Strategy marks a major step forward, prioritising walking, wheeling, scooting and cycling as the default choice for everyday journeys.

“By making our streets safer and more accessible for everyone, we are not only tackling air pollution and climate change but also supporting the health and wellbeing of our communities.

“We are committed to building a borough where active travel is not just possible, but preferable - ensuring that everyone in Lewisham, regardless of age or ability, can move around safely, confidently and sustainably.”
