Knife Amnesty Campaigner, Faron Paul, makes surprise visit to students at Lewisham School

Faron Paul, a knife amnesty campaigner from Lewisham who has been working alongside Idris Elba to reduce knife crime, surprised students from Abbey Manor College in Lee Green on Friday 11 October with a visit. Faron was there to hear the students do a presentation on him, which looked at the work he has done as a ‘local hero’ in reducing knife crime.

Headteacher, Heather Johnston says:

‘We’re thrilled to have Faron Paul visit the students at Abbey Manor College and hear the presentation on him. The presentation was part of the students’ project titled: ‘We can be heroes’, which acknowledges the lives of people who come from Lewisham and have gone on to change behaviours and attitudes on various issues including knife and violent crime and racism.’

Faron Paul, was one of the local heroes the students looked at as well as many others such as  Doreen Lawrence, Ian Wright, Dave, Fekky, Ashley Walters, Rap Man, Maxi Priest, Floella Benjamin, Malorie Blackman, Raye, Stormzy, and Gary Oldman. The project promoted the idea that all students can be hero's in their community regardless of what challenges they themselves may face. Students worked on the project over a six week period resulting in a presentation in the form a portfolio that mapped out the achievement from birth to date of their Lewisham Hero.

The students were particularly impressed by Faron and how he was able to take his own personal tragedy of being stabbed multiple times, not only to survive it, but then to start campaigning and speaking to young people carrying knives and convince them to give them up in return for JD vouchers. To date, Faron has taken 5000 knives off the streets on London, potentially saving hundreds of young lives.

Faron says:

‘If I can prevent one young person losing their life, then it’s all worth it for me.’

Faron set up Faz Amnesty campaign in response to reducing the number of knifes on the streets of London.

One of the students who did the presentation says:

"Thank you for being an inspiration Faron, you are having an enormous impact on society by taking knifes of the street.  We think you are brave"
