Victory in Europe (VE) Day, commemorated each year on 8 May, marks the formal end of World War II in Europe in 1945, following the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany. This year, Lewisham joined the rest of the nation in honouring the 80th anniversary of this historic day with a special flag-raising ceremony.

The event took place outside the Civic Suite in Catford and brought together local dignitaries, residents, cadets, and community members to reflect on the significance of the day and the enduring importance of peace. Mayor of Lewisham, Brenda Dacres, raised the flag, followed by a reading of the commemorative poem VE Day by Angela Wybrow, performed by Young Mayor Shane Grant.

In her speech, Speaker of Lewisham, Councillor Jacq Paschoud, shared personal reflections: “My childhood was full of stories about the war because my parents were children during that time. The impact on them lasted their whole lifetime. That’s why this anniversary is so significant—there are still members of the public who served during the war. Remembering helps us learn from the past and honour the sacrifices made.”

Sir Steve Bullock, former Mayor of Lewisham, also spoke about the importance of remembrance and community resilience.

Lewisham Council is proud to commemorate this important milestone and to stand with communities across the UK in remembering the courage, sacrifice, and hope that VE Day represents.
