Explore More, keep cool at your local library
Launched as part of the National Year of Reading, the campaign highlights the wide range of activities, resources and welcoming spaces available across the borough.
This summer, libraries offer even more reasons to visit. As temperatures rise, several Lewisham libraries are designated cool spaces – free, welcoming places where residents can take a break from the heat, stay comfortable and access support if needed.
Of the 17 designated cool spaces across Lewisham, four are libraries:
- Catford Library (air conditioned)
- Downham Library (air conditioned on the first floor)
- Deptford Library (cool and well ventilated)
- New Cross Community Library (air conditioned)
If you're looking for other cool spaces, residents can also visit venues including Glass Mill Leisure Centre, Forest Hill Pools, Horniman Museum, Pepys Community Hub, Evelyn Community Centre and Goldsmiths Community Centre, among others across the borough.

Explore More, join the Summer Reading Challenge
Whether you're looking for somewhere to read, study, attend an event, take part in the Summer Reading Challenge or simply escape the heat for a while, visit Catford Library, Downham Library, Deptford Lounge or New Cross Community Library this summer.
Libraries are also home to the 2026 Summer Reading Challenge (4 July–20 September), a free annual programme that encourages children to read for fun over the summer holidays. Open to children aged 4–11, the challenge invites young readers to visit their local library, read six books and collect rewards along the way. Participants receive a sticker book and a special edition of Storytime magazine. Children who complete the challenge will receive a certificate, medal and an invitation to a special Champions Celebration at the Broadway Theatre in October.
