Carnival goes digital for 2020

Notting Hill Carnival is one of the largest celebrations of Caribbean culture in the UK, where people can enjoy steel bands and sound systems playing dancehall, roots reggae, costume parades and great food. Learn how you can enjoy the festivities from home this year.

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic this year’s events will be live streamed on the festivals official website for free between 9am and 11pm on the 30 and 31 August, with warm up activities from 6pm till midnight on 29 August.

The line-up includes music from legendary sound systems and DJs and performances from dancehall and soca artists. Steel bands and costumed ‘mas’ performers will transport you back to the customary parade.

Spotify, the official partner of the event, will be streaming specially selected playlists by official sound systems and Carnival DJs, as well as podcasts about Carnival history.

During the week leading up to Carnival weekend, a series of mini-films will be available to view on the festivals official website. The ‘Colours of Carnival’ series tell the story of this year’s event from the perspective of some of the music and dance performers and chefs, including Levi Roots. The videos will launch Carnival with a live countdown to the start of the celebrations.

Matthew Philip, Executive Director of Notting Hill Carnival, calls for people to enjoy Carnival safely. “Carnival is such an important part of people’s lives and key celebration of the multiculturalism of the UK, and we have a responsibility to our community and pioneers to honour that. We also have a responsibility to protect the black community and our elders by respecting social distancing and taking Carnival away from the streets for this year, so this is a fantastic solution for 2020”.
