Home checks
These visits help us make sure everyone is safe, supported, and living in a well maintained property.
What is the purpose of a Home Check?
- checking in with residents: making sure the information we hold is up to date, identifying any vulnerabilities, and offering support or signposting where needed
- checking the property: ensuring repairs are up to date and that the home meets health, safety, and tenancy standards
As part of our Home Checks programme, Housing Officers will carry out a mandatory visit to every property once every five years, as part of a rolling cycle.
What to expect during the visit
Visits will be carried out by your Housing Officer, who will always show official photo ID.
If you ever have concerns about the identity of a council officer, you can call 020 8314 6000 to verify their details.
The visit will usually take around 30-45 minutes to complete and will include:
Updating your household information
Your Housing Officer will check that the details we hold for you are correct. They will ask about:
- who lives in your property
- whether anyone has vulnerabilities or disabilities
- whether any additional support might be needed
- whether we need to adjust our services to meet your needs.
A property inspection
The officer will look around your home to ensure it is being well maintained.
If there are repairs needed, they will check whether these have already been reported to the Repairs team and discuss next steps with you.
Space to talk about your tenancy
You’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about your tenancy.
If you are experiencing difficulties, for example with finances, wellbeing, or maintaining your home, your Housing Officer may discuss available support and, with your agreement, refer you to services that can help.
Booking a Home Check
Your Housing Officer will contact you to arrange a Home Check. If you would prefer to arrange your Home Check directly, you can contact your Housing Officer by:
- email: housingmanagement@lewisham.gov.uk
- phone: 0800 028 2028 (option 3, then option 5)
They will work with you to book a time that suits your availability.
