• you must live in the borough and not already have an allotment
• you must specify which sites you are applying for
• you may choose up to three allotment sites
• only one application can be made by each household

• we recommend that you join the waiting lists for allotments located close to where you live. This will make it easier to visit your plot regularly and get the most out of it when one becomes available
  
  
• maintaining an allotment is a year-round commitment. Spring and early summer are the busiest periods for planting and establishing crops, while summer often requires regular watering. Autumn and winter are often used for plot maintenance, improvement projects, and winter growing
  
  
• depending on the size of the plot and the season, you will need to commit an average of at least 2 hours a week to maintaining it. This is likely to be more during the main growing season
  
  
• preparing your plot when you first take it on can be hard work, particularly if it involves clearing overgrown vegetation, improving the soil, and constructing raised beds or other features you would like to include. However, the effort invested at the start pays off, as a well-prepared plot is easier to maintain and more productive in future seasons
  
  
• If you are interested in growing food but are unable to commit to managing your own plot, a Community Food Growing project may be a suitable alternative. Please visit the Community Gardens page for information about projects in your area

If your contact details change while you are on the waiting list, please  let us know by emailing allotments@lewisham.gov.uk. If we cannot reach you, the plot will be offered to the next person, and your application may be removed.

Your three choices are not registered in order of preference. We will offer you an allotment plot for the site you reach the top of the list first. At this time, you are welcome to accept the offer or stay on the list to wait for a plot at one of your other choices.  

Accepting an allotment plot removes your application for your other choices.

When you take on a plot, you enter into a tenancy agreement with the council. This sets out how your plot should be used and helps make sure sites are safe and well looked after for everyone. 

Some key rules:

• Grow your own, for your own use: Use your plot to grow fruit, vegetables and flowers for you, your family and friends. You must not sell produce
• Stay within your boundary: Do not extend beyond your plot. Keep paths, edges and hedges clear and well maintained
• Treat others with respect: Be considerate to other plot holders and neighbours. All tenants must follow the site Code of Conduct
• Pay your rent on time: Rent is paid yearly in advance. We will give notice of any changes
• Structures must be limited: You can have a small shed or greenhouse within size limits. Other structures are not allowed
• You must use the plot yourself: You cannot sublet your plot or pass your tenancy on to a friend or family member. If you no longer want your plot, you must give notice so it can be reallocated in someone on the waiting list
• Follow safety rules: This includes guidance on bonfires, water use, dogs, and using horticultural chemicals safely
• Manage waste responsibly: Compost where possible and keep your plot and surrounding area free of rubbish
• Inspections: Council staff may visit and inspect plots at any time to check they are being used and maintained in line with the tenancy agreement. This helps ensure fairness and that plots are actively cultivated
• Eligibility: Allotments are for Lewisham residents only

Allotment sites vary in layout and path condition, and access may be uneven in places. We are working to improve infrastructure where possible. If you have mobility requirements, we recommend contacting the allotment team before applying to help assess which allotments are suitable for you.

How big is a plot?

Many plots are on average either 62.5 square metres or 125 square meters although plots of other sizes are offered as well. 
We can also offer smaller sized plots for those with less time to manage a full plot.

How much does it cost to rent an allotment site?

Allotment cost in 2026: 

• 62.5 square metre plot: £35.43
• 125 square meter plot: £70.90

The exact price depends on the allotment site and the size of the plot.

Are there any rent concessions available? 

• Senior Citizens (60 or over) are granted a 50% 

Disabled Freedom Pass holders are granted a 50% concession

Plot holders with a Be Active Scheme membership (Lewisham Library Card) are granted a 25% concession. Find out if you are eligible for a Be Active Scheme membership.

Do your allotments have water available? 
All sites have water unless stated otherwise.

Can I apply for an allotment owned by Lewisham Council if I don't live in the borough?
We currently have waiting lists. Thus, we do not accept applications from or offer plots to people who do not live in the borough.

Can I rent my allotment for as long as I like?
Currently our policy allows allotment holders to keep their plots for as long as they wish to. However, you are the only tenant. You cannot pass the plot on to anyone else.

If you do not maintain your plot to the standard required in the tenancy agreement, we may ask you to give it up, so that others on the waiting list can use and enjoy it.

Can I apply for an allotment outside of the borough?
Other boroughs are generally experiencing a lot of demand but do sometimes have availability. Contact them directly for further information.

I already have an allotment in the borough; can I apply for another one?
You are only allowed one allotment per household. If you want to move to another allotment site, call 020 8314 2277 or email allotments@lewisham.gov.uk.

Allotment tenants are invited to take part in Grow to Give and help make a difference by sharing surplus produce with others in Lewisham.

Good Food Lewisham is a local network working to improve the borough’s food system.

They connect allotment growers with nearby community food support projects, including food banks, community meals, and social supermarkets. This makes it easy to donate any extra fruit and vegetables you grow to residents who are experiencing food instability.

Lewisham's allotment sites are managed in two ways. Some sites are managed directly by Lewisham Council, while others are self-managed by volunteer site committees.

All allotment sites on this page, including self-managed sites, are Council-owned allotments. If you would like to apply for a plot, you must do so through Lewisham Council. The Council manages the waiting list and allocates plots across all sites.

At self-managed sites, volunteer committees are responsible for the day-to-day running of the site. Lewisham Council works closely with these committees and with the Lewisham Self-Managed Allotments Association (LSMAA) to support tenants, maintain high standards and help ensure allotment sites remain successful and sustainable for the future.

Lewisham Self-Managed Allotment Association (LSMAA)

The LSMAA works on behalf of affiliated Self-managed allotment sites in Lewisham. It will:

• represent sites to Lewisham Council
• communicate information between sites and the Council
• promote good management and effective use of allotment land
• support site improvements where appropriate
• help ensure allotment sites remain sustainable and successful in the long term
