As fresh as it gets at destination supermarket

The wonderful owners of the Turkish Food Centre (TFC) pride themselves on the freshness of their products – and for good reason. Four days a week they get a colourful mix of fruit and vegetables delivered, their butchers receive meat five times a week and their bread is made daily with none sold from the previous day. At the end of each day, any remaining bread is donated to those in need. With their delicious cakes, pastries and flavours regularly imported from Turkey, it’s clear that sharing their culture is at the heart of who they are. 

The TFC was the deserving winner of our 2024 Mayor’s Business Awards in the ‘Best Independent Food Retailer’ category. Now, proud owner Ali Kuyumcu and his team, are one of the six local business faces featured in this year’s Discover Lewisham summer campaign – reminding people to support our fantastic local businesses and explore what Lewisham has to offer. 

“My recommendation is the first time you come shopping probably starting off with our mezze, getting some breads from us and getting a Turkish delight. Next, go to our butchers, get your lamb shoulders, meat, everything... and get home happy.”

People are not only drawn to the TFC by their incredible offer of unique and international products – but it’s the warm hospitality once you enter the door. With over 350 daily customers, Ali highlights the importance of having a good relationship with regulars. Ali and his team feel confident in introducing new products for their customers to try, but they also work hard to cater to what their customers want to see on their shelves – making the TFC a true community-driven retailer. 

“We’ve seen almost two generations of neighbours and locals. It’s great to have a business here in Lewisham because our locals are very trustworthy.” 

Ali speaks highly about running a business in Lewisham. He feels inspired by the diversity of cultures and traditions here in the borough.  

Like many smaller retailers, he reflects on the challenges of being a local and independent business during this time – especially with the rise of e-commerce deliveries.
