Lift repairs and maintenance
Communal lifts in blocks of flats
The majority of lifts have a voice communication device fitted. If the lift breaks down, press the alarm button and it will automatically connect you to our 24 hour call centre.
Alternatively, call us on 0800 028 2028. If someone is stuck in the lift we will aim to arrive within one hour. If the lift is empty we aim to arrive within to 2 hours during the day and calls out of normal working hours is up to 3 hours.
Many lifts break down because of misuse or vandalism. Please help us by reporting offenders to us.
Please do not:
- allow children to interfere with lift doors
- block lift doors open
- play with the winding gear
- go into the lift plant room or the lift shaft
- drop litter in the lift

Mobility lifts within the home
If you are a Lewisham Council tenant and have lifting equipment installed at home, such as stair lifts, step lifts, through-floor lifts and fixed hoists, we are responsible for maintaining and inspecting it.
How often are lifts maintained and inspected?
Our contractor, Lift & Engineering Services (LES) Ltd, performs service visits every 6 months.
Independent inspections by British Engineering Services (BES) are also required every 6 months. It is a legal requirement to carry out these inspections.
Why does lifting equipment require maintenance and inspections?
Lifting equipment has mechanical and electrical components that wear out. Regular maintenance and inspections ensure your safety and minimise the chance of a breakdown.
What if lifting equipment is no longer in use?
If the equipment in your home is no longer in use, inform LES when they attend. They will decommission or isolate the equipment but will not remove it.
What if lifting equipment has been previously removed?
If you no longer have lifting equipment and LES or BES get in touch to arrange maintenance or inspection, please allow them access to confirm this. Access is required as per your tenancy agreement.
LES can be contacted directly on 01384 633115 should you need to book a maintenance visit.
