Young artists recognised in Lewisham food waste competition
Earlier this year, children across the borough were invited to design their dream food waste bin and learn more about recycling food waste. Colouring templates were handed out at community events, made available in Lewisham libraries and shared online.
Three winning designs were selected by Councillor Corin Ashwell, Cabinet Member for Environment, Nature, Transport and Climate Action.
To celebrate their success, the winners and their families were invited to visit the Council's rubbish and recycling service site. During the visit, they received copies of their designs, explored collection vehicles and took part in a recycling sorting game.
Anna, one of the winners, said: "I know the things that go in each bin, like black plastic can't be recycled and other things."
On winning the competition, Anna added: "I feel very pleased."
Food waste collections are now available to all residents living in council flats in Lewisham. Work is continuing to introduce the service to privately owned and rented flats across the borough.
Councillor Corin Ashwell, Cabinet Member for Environment, Nature, Transport and Climate Action, said: "It's fantastic to see young people getting involved and learning more about food waste recycling. Over the last three months alone, residents across the borough have recycled more than 1,427 tonnes of food waste, almost 44 tonnes more than during the same period last year.
One hundred per cent of the food waste we collect is turned into green energy and nutrient-rich fertiliser instead of ending up in general rubbish. That makes food waste recycling one of the simplest ways residents can make a positive difference for the environment.
Congratulations to our three winners. Their designs were full of creativity and imagination, and I hope they're proud to see them on their food waste caddies at home."
