Over 1,100 Lewisham residents supported towards employment

Lewisham Works, the Council’s free employment service, celebrates exceeding an exciting milestone and manifesto commitment in half the expected time.

In the Spring of 2022, Lewisham Works was set up to help local people achieve their career goals and build brighter futures, with a goal of supporting 1000 residents by 2026. In just two years the service has exceeded this milestone and is now closer to having helped 1200 residents on their career journey.

Proudly, the service has a 40% employment rate and to date supported 215 refugees and 114 care leavers. A significant number of residents have secured Living Wage employment through the service.

No matter where in their employment journey, Advisors offer Lewisham residents bespoke, holistic employment and training support, that has proven to transform lives. The service harnesses the strength of collaboration, working closely with local training partners, employers and organisations to provide residents with realistic pathways into secure and meaningful work.

To mark the milestone achievement, the Council hosted a moving celebratory event at Catford’s Broadway Theatre Bar where moving stories were shared from Lewisham Works participants and partners. Hear some of their inspiring stories.

Councillor Kim Powell, Cabinet Member for Business, Jobs and Skills said:

“Supporting nearly 1200 Lewisham residents with nearly 1 in every 2 securing paid employment is an incredible feat that positively impacts families and communities far beyond that number.

“This is an important step towards reaching our ambition for a more dynamic local economy - where all residents are able to secure well-paid, career-enhancing jobs and opportunities within the borough.
