COVID-19 in Lewisham - 8 July update

Dr Catherine Mbema, our Director of Public Health shares the latest update on coronavirus in our borough and the steps we can all take to help protect ourselves and everyone in our communities.

With increasing COVID-19 case rates in Lewisham, I am eager to see as many people as possible aged 18 and over receive the COVID-19 vaccination. As of 7 July, just over 60% of Lewisham residents aged 18 and over have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccination and just over 40% have received both doses. Let’s do all that we can to see these vaccination rates increase to provide the best possible protection against COVID-19 for Lewisham. Find out more information on Lewisham COVID-19 vaccination rates.

Look out for COVID-19 teams Catford, New Cross and Deptford

Today our trained teams will visit Catford town centre inviting residents to get the COVID-19 vaccine in a NHS mobile vaccination unit. The vaccination bus will be parked on Catford Broadway all day offering the Pfizer vaccine and the team will be in the area to engage with local residents as well as shops and businesses in the town centre. Take the time to have a chat and support the effort to keep Lewisham safe and protect everyone in our community from the virus.

Working closely with the NHS South East London CCG, Lewisham Council is rolling out an outreach programme with trained teams visiting residents door-to-door in areas across Lewisham to talk about the risk of COVID-19, discuss the vaccination and support local people with public health information.

Next stops for the vaccination bus will be Deptford High Street on Friday, with outreach teams planning to visit the Pepys Estate and then New Cross and the residential areas around Millwall on Saturday.

One of the busiest days this week saw our teams visit over 2,200 households to share information and answer questions about the COVID-19 vaccination. As well as talking to thousands of Lewisham residents, hundreds of local people are taking the opportunity to get the Pfizer or AstraZeneca vaccines on the bus or pop along to local walk-in clinics. Find details of clinics near you.

Strengthen your defence, get the vaccine

Thousands of Pfizer vaccines will be offered at Saturday’s pop-up vaccination clinic at Millwall Football Club this Saturday 10 July, 8am – 8pm.

If you’re a Lewisham resident aged 18 or over, you can get your first jab by booking in advance. Walk-ins will also be available on the day.

Second doses will also be available if it is at least eight weeks since your first dose.

As football fever rises ahead of the Euro final, Londoners booking or getting their first jab between Tuesday 6 and Thursday 8 July can enter a ticket draw for an invitation to the Euro final at Wembley and 50 tickets to watch the final in Trafalgar Square.

There’s no parking on site at Milwall, so please plan your journey carefully –  you can find out more about the event here.
