Celebrating Lewisham Educators by Shauna Blanchfield

Chalk mural on pillar of shopping centre depicting hands reaching each other

Location: Lewisham Shopping Centre, North Square (Column next to Costa)

About the Legends:

There were so many heartfelt messages for the brilliant educators in the borough, who work so hard to inspire our children and young people to greatness. From teachers to school support staff, to mentors – this artwork is dedicated to them all.

This is an interactive piece. So if there was a special person who inspired your educational journey, please pick a piece of chalk and write or draw your own tribute.

Artwork Description:

“Celebrating Lewisham Educators’ is a 2-sided blackboard mural as I wanted something that was immediately symbolic of being at school. I used chalkboard paint and white paint markers to achieve this. I left one section unsealed so that it remains a useable chalkboard for the public to interact with.”

About the artist:

Shauna Blanchfield is an Irish artist, based in New Cross. Her visual arts practice is grounded in figuration and thinks about how self-definition is informed by place. She is interested in questions of unreliable memories, collective social identity and inter-dependence. Shauna incorporated mural-making into her practice in 2021, after sitting the Lewisham School of Muralism, with recent installations at Isla Ray and Badger Badger in Deptford and an upcoming public artwork for Deptford X Festival 2022. She balances her art practice with freelance events and cultural project management and is a Trustee of Camberwell Arts Festival.
