New food market comes to Lewisham
Lewisham Food Market is the second venture for the team behind Catford Food Market which received two new accolades – Best Local Food Market in South London and Food Market of the Year, London and the South East – at the UK Enterprise Awards earlier this month.
The team will be emulating their winning formula by placing local traders – who are representative of the community – centre stage at Lewisham Food Market, while also continuing the mission to reduce food mileage and promote sustainability.
Vendors confirmed for the launch include Himalayan dumplings purveyors Mandala, shuckers of the best oysters in London, Rock Oysters and Thai Fridays who will tantalise tastebuds with authentic Thai street food. Meanwhile Raastawala, stalwarts of the Catford location, will be serving up fabulous North East Indian cuisine.
Cornmill Gardens is a fully pedestrianised green space with plenty of seating for al fresco dining. It overlooks the River Ravensbourne and is opposite Lewisham’s rail and DLR stations. It is hoped this central location – just nine minutes from central London – will broaden the market’s appeal to visitors from outside the borough too.
Lewisham Council is supporting the market with £16k in funding which is being delivered over eight months.
Cllr Kim Powell – Cabinet Member for Businesses, Jobs and Skills – said:
“Food brings people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds together so we’re excited to be supporting Lewisham Food Market. It’s set to be the latest jewel in the crown for our vibrant local foodie scene.
“We hope it follows the huge success of the award-winning Catford Food Market and helps cement the borough as one of London’s most exciting culinary destinations.
“We’d love to see lots of residents at the launch in August so please come, show your support and enjoy some fantastic food.”
Lewisham Food Market launches on Sunday 6 August from 10am-4pm and will be held on the first Sunday of each month thereafter, it is free to attend and dog-friendly. For more details, please visit lewishamfoodmarket.com.
