Lewisham to pioneer NHS Health Check Online

The innovative new service makes it simpler than ever for people to complete their free NHS Health Check and has the potential to transform how residents access preventative health care.

NHS Health Checks are offered every five years to people aged 40-74 who do not have an existing health condition. Often described as an MOT for the body, they assess overall health and help identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the risk of serious conditions, including heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, type 2 diabetes and dementia.

The new NHS Health Check Online is designed to mirror and complement the existing face to face offer, while giving residents greater flexibility and control through an alternative mode of delivery.

Instead of juggling appointment times with work, caring duties or other commitments, eligible Lewisham residents will be able to use the NHS App to:

• complete an easy-to-use health questionnaire
• enter measurements such as height and weight
• record and submit blood pressure readings taken at home or in community settings
• upload results from a simple home blood test kit (where eligible)
• receive personalised feedback and clear next step recommendations

All results will be automatically linked to the patient’s GP record. Anyone requiring a follow up assessment or treatment will be asked to contact their GP for an appointment.

Councillor Paul Bell, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Adult Social Care, said:

“We are delighted that Lewisham has been chosen by the Department for Health and Social Care to pilot this new initiative, which will make it easier and more convenient for our residents to monitor their health through NHS Health Checks.

“Lewisham Council has a strong record of encouraging residents to take up their NHS Health Check and screenings, but we want to make it even more accessible.

“This pilot is not just about new technology; it is about saving lives by making healthcare fit into our 21st century lifestyles.

“It will give us early insights and valuable learning that will help shape the national rollout, ensuring the service is effective, inclusive and user friendly.”

Early testing of the NHS Health Check Online is launching across several GP practices in Lewisham. Residents do not need to take any action at this stage – those registered with participating surgeries will be contacted directly as soon as they become eligible.
