Lewisham Council launches grants programme to support LGBTQ+ History Month 2027 celebrations

Community groups, voluntary organisations and local residents are being invited to apply for funding to deliver events and activities as part of LGBTQ+ History Month in the borough next February.

Community groups, voluntary organisations and local residents are being invited to apply for funding to deliver events and activities as part of LGBTQ+ History Month in the borough next February.

Lewisham Council is offering small grants of up to £1,000 to support community-led projects that celebrate LGBTQ+ histories, cultures and experiences, while helping to build greater understanding, visibility and inclusion across the borough.

The funding is open to organisations and groups with ideas for events, workshops, creative projects, exhibitions, performances, discussions or other activities that will engage local communities during LGBTQ+ History Month.

Successful projects will form part of a wider borough-wide programme of celebrations taking place throughout February.

Cllr Hau-Yu Tam, Cabinet Member for Communities, Sanctuary and Healing, said:

“Lewisham is proud of our diverse communities and our longstanding commitment to equality, inclusion, justice and belonging. We have a rich LGBTQ* history, from older and younger gay men's organising with the local branch of the Campaign for Homosexual Equality through the 70s and 80s, to the Honor Oak trans rights anti-fascist protests in 2023-24.

“We know that some of the most meaningful events are designed and delivered by local communities themselves. These grants are an opportunity for residents and organisations to bring forward creative ideas, tell stories that matter, build solidarity and help ensure LGBTQ+ voices are heard, celebrated and defended across Lewisham.

“I encourage anyone with an idea for an event or project to apply and help us create an inspiring programme for LGBTQ+ History Month 2027.”

Applications are now open and interested groups are encouraged to submit proposals that reflect the diversity of Lewisham's LGBTQ+ communities and create opportunities for residents to come together, learn and celebrate.

The Council particularly welcomes projects that are inclusive, community-focused and accessible to a wide range of audiences:
