Green Flags still flying high in Lewisham's parks
The international Green Flag Award scheme is managed by Keep Britain Tidy. Now in its 30th year, it celebrates parks and green spaces that are welcoming, accessible, well maintained, and support nature and biopersity.
This year’s total is up from the 24 awards received in 2025, reflecting our ongoing commitment to investing in and caring for our green and blue spaces. The achievement is also a testament to the work of Glendale, our key delivery partner for parks, as well as the dedication of volunteers and community groups, who give their time to keep these spaces thriving.
Our award-winning sites are spread across the borough, and those managed by Glendale include Bellingham Green, Chinbrook Meadows, Deptford Gardens, Ladywell Fields, Lewisham Park, Mountsfield Park and Sydenham Wells Park.
The borough also received eight Green Flag Community Awards, which recognise sites managed in partnership with local Friends groups, including Albion Millennium Green, Devonshire Road Nature Reserve, Grove Park Nature Reserve and St Mary's Churchyard.
Beckenham Place Park and *Horniman Museum and Gardens were both awarded the prestigious Green Heritage Site Accreditation, which recognises public green spaces that manage and celebrate their history and culture.
Councillor Corin Ashwell, Cabinet Member for Environment, Nature, Transport and Climate Action, said:
“A huge thank you to our ground maintenance staff, our partner Glendale, our Friends of Parks groups and all the volunteers who give their time to help care for these spaces. This achievement is down to their hard work, commitment and pride in our parks, and it’s fantastic to see that recognised through another successful year of Green Flag Awards.
“We’re incredibly proud to have received 28 awards, up from 24 last year. As an inner-London borough, high-quality parks and green spaces are vital for the health and wellbeing of our communities, providing places to exercise, play, relax and connect with nature. A Green Flag is a sign that these spaces are safe, welcoming and well cared for, and something everyone involved should be proud of.”
