Tantalising takeaways

When treating yourself to a takeaway during lockdown, consider ditching the big chains and supporting our fantastic local eateries instead.

Takeaways have become something of a highlight during lockdown. A weekly treat we all look forward to. It’s been a challenging time for restaurants and cafes in the borough so it's all the more important we continue to support them. When ordering your takeaway why not ditch the big chains and order from one of our fantastic local eateries instead? Whether you fancy a pizza, a pie, some sushi or contemporary Indian cooking – Lewisham has your tastebuds covered. Roll call, please…

Bukky's Sunday Kitchen

Sydenham

Fried chicken served with plantain, jollof rice and onions and peppers
I trained as a chef at college before getting sucked into the office-based corporate world of HR. Cooking has always remained a passion though - a way for me to be creative and express myself. Bukky’s Sunday Kitchen was established during the rollercoaster year that was 2020. It is based on a Sunday kitchen pop-up model and serves a simple Nigerian cuisine inspired menu, such as tasty jollof rice and plantain served with chicken, fish or vegan options. We deliver within a 2-mile radius of Forest Hill. Email Bukky's Sunday Kitchen for a menu.

Guava Kitchen

A selection of fritter, salads and freshly squeezed juices laid out on a tableForest Hill

The Guava Kitchen is all about the experience, even in these challenging times. We offer vegan and vegetarian cuisine with a tropical twist. Our recipes are tasty, wholesome and authentic. The most popular dishes include our Plantain Lasagna, the Guava Rundown Curry and Plantain Balls. We recently reopened to do takeaways. To celebrate Veganuary 2021 we have created a Bumper takeaway pack for family and (co-habiting) friends to enjoy. We have made alterations to comply with Covid regulations and keep our customers safe. Visit the Guava Kitchen website.

Gustosissima

Gustosissima began life as a street food stall but we moved to premises on Dartmouth Road during the pandemic. The idea was always to bring people together through fantastic food.

We offer traditional Italian cuisine like Beef Ragu-Bolognese, Aubergine and Tomato, Carbonara with the occasional modern twist. All our dishes are gluten free and cooked with extra virgin olive oil or vegan butter. We use only free range meat and have many vegan options. You can choose hot takeaways or heat at home meals, we deliver or you can collect. To thank you for all the support we’ve received so far, we are offering a 10% discount off your next meal. Hibagon Sushi and Grill

We believe it’s Hibagon’s unique offering that makes it so special. Our carefully considered menu begins with hot appetisers like traditional hirata buns filled with barbecued pork, chicken or salmon served with wasabi mayo. Tempura and salmon tartare or a Japanese-style ceviche are other ways to wind up to the main event. Ramen, bento boxes, donburi and curry satisfy the lunchtime crowd. Last but not least, you must try our selection of artisanal sushi and sashimi. A crowd pleaser any day of the week. Delivery or collection only until lockdown measures ease. Visit the Hibagon Sushi and Grill website.

Masala Wala

Masala Wala Cafe is an authentic Pakistani eatery based in Brockley which opened in 2015. We offer a small, curated, freshly cooked menu that celebrates and showcases an intriguing array of flavours and ingredients from our cultural heritage. We are partnering with an independent service to provide takeaways for delivery during lockdown, which is new for us. We are a small mother and daughter team. Sadly we lost our founder and big sister, Saima Thompson aged 31 back in June. We seek to continue her legacy and serve our local community. Visit the Masala Wala website.

Sparrow

Five tapas style dishes arranged on a wooden tableLewisham

We’ve offered a varied menu since opening in 2017. But the focus has always been on using fresh seasonal produce and maximising flavour in everything we make. The pandemic has been hard but in many ways we are lucky. We have a fantastic base of loyal customers who’ve supported us throughout. Our staff have remained healthy and committed to the restaurant. Since January we have moved away from offering takeaway meals and are focusing instead on pre-prepared foods that you can heat at home. The emphasis is on traditional winter warmers like slow cooked braises and pies. Visit the Sparrow website.
