What we are doing to improve air quality in Lewisham

On this page you can see a list of some of the things we are doing to help improve the air quality in the borough.

Some of the things we are doing to improve air quality

  • We have introduced a 20mph speed limit on most roads in Lewisham to help reduce congestion and its effect on air quality.

  • We have opened new green spaces in the borough such as Charlottenberg Park in New Cross and Surrey Canal Linear Park in Deptford.

  • We have improved cycling routes in the borough to encourage less confident cyclists. We have also improved walking routes.

  • We are installing electric charging points to encourage residents to use electric cars to encourage residents to use electric cars.

  • We are working with local schools to reduce the impact of roadside car emissions. For example, we worked with Dalmain Primary School to install a ‘living wall’ of small leaves that absorb pollution.

  • We enforce the borough’s smoke control zone, which minimises pollution from domestic open fires and bonfires.

  • We monitor and manage emissions from construction activity. As part of this work we have got funding from the Mayor of London to reduce the impact of pollution from construction sites in Deptford over the next five years.

  • We are reducing emissions from our own vehicles.
