Latest health advice about COVID-19

What to do if you have symptoms and frequently asked questions

Protect yourself and others

Everyone has a role to play in slowing the spread of coronavirus. You should only leave your house for one of five reasons:

  • stay at home as much as possible
  • work from home if you can
  • limit contact with other people
  • keep your distance if you go out (2 metres apart where possible)
  • wash your hands regularly

Self isolate if you have symptoms

If you or someone in your household has any of the following symptoms your whole house must start to self isolate:

  • a high temperature
  • a new continuous cough
  • a loss of, or change in, your normal sense of taste or smell (anosmia)

For further details on coronavirus symptoms please see the NHS COVID-19 symptoms web page.

To self isolate:

  • everyone in your household must stay at home for 14 days and keep away from others
  • do not go to your GP, hospital or pharmacy
  • go to NHS.UK to check your symptoms and follow the specialist medical advice. Only call NHS 111 if you can't get online or your symptoms worsen
  • protect older people and those with existing health conditions by avoiding contact

For further guidance on self isolating please see the NHS self isolation web page.

Stop the infection spreading

  • wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available
  • wash your hands as soon as you get back home
  • cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze
  • put used tissues in the bin immediately and wash your hands afterwards
