Welcome from Freddie Murray, Director of Regeneration and Place

Thank you for taking an interest in this key role.

One of London’s largest boroughs, with over 295,000 residents, Lewisham is fortunate to have award winning parks, great transport links, a thriving cultural scene and world class education institutions such as Trinity Laban dance centre and Goldsmiths, University of London.

We are ambitious and have had considerable success in driving large scale regeneration in key parts of the borough. We have huge opportunities, with a number of strategic areas and sites that can deliver new homes, employment space and opportunities and improved transport and social infrastructure.

Housing is at the heart of this – whilst the borough has undergone significant change over the past 20 years, and seen significant housing growth in some areas, like the rest of London house price inflation has outstripped wage growth to the point that many parts of the borough are now unaffordable for existing residents. We face a growing number of families in nightly paid accommodation, many of them placed out of borough and a growing list of households waiting for a permanent home.

With this challenge comes opportunity – the Mayor and Council, as part of the new Corporate Strategy, have committed to deliver a further 1,000 new social homes over the course of the administration. Our partnership with Grainger will deliver a new generation of Build to Rent homes and we are at the forefront in local government of innovation in house building, with a programme of modular construction development sites.

The newly created Strategic Development Team will be at the forefront of this work, overseeing the delivery of these housing-led capital programmes, working with and acting as the strategic client for our delivery partners, including Lewisham Homes, housing associations and the partnership with Grainger amongst others.

The scale of the opportunity to deliver is challenging but equally exciting. We are looking for a driven, motivated leader with experience in housing development, particularly in a local authority context. If that sounds like you then I hope that you will join us on our journey to improve the quality of our residents’ lives.

I look forward to hearing from you.
