What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
This class is only suitable for learners who are confident sewing machine users & have previous garment making experience- please note that it is not aimed at complete beginners, and basic sewing skills and techniques will not be taught.
To be able to use a simple pattern template & body measurements to cut out your garment To use a range of professional sewing techniques. To use specialist tools & equipment correctly and safely To complete your wrap trousers
What teaching methods will the tutor use?
The tutor will use a range of teaching methods during the course which will include the following: Demonstration - both group and individual, one to one tuition, group work, assessment of progress, observation, discussion / question and answer sessions.
What assessment methods will the tutor use?
The course tutor will use a range of methods to assess progress on the course. These may include: Observation, discussion and self-evaluation of your work, 1-2-1 and informal group question and answer sessions.
Will extra work be required outside the class times?
What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
You will need to bring everything that you will use on the day: your own basic sewing kit (including dressmaking pins, needles, tape measure, and fabric cutting out scissors), the fabric of your choice, and good quality polyester sewing thread in a matching colour. Please do not purchase anything new until you have received confirmation that the class is definitely running.
What do I need to bring to the first class?
All items previously listed in the materials section & please note it is not possible to bring your own sewing machine.
Options when finished
The department offers a wide variety of fashion and textile courses at different levels. Information about progression courses is available through the tutor, the Curriculum Leader or the online Adult Learning Lewisham programme. There are also a range of courses at a higher level offered across London and the South East by Colleges, Community and Adult Education providers and through local craftspeople. For more information about higher level courses currently available, please speak to your tutor or the Curriculum Leader.
