Hand-tied summer bouquets

Learn to create your own stunning bouquets using seasonal materials- suitable for either professional style gifts or vase designs for a variety of home or venue decoration. The course will cover key skills including : the choice & preparation of materials, learning the essential hand-tying technique of spiralling your stems to create a strong bouquet shape, methods & materials to gift wrap designs, and will also consider current trends & style influences.

What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
No prior knowledge or experience is required to enrol on this course- it is ideal for either complete beginners, or those learners who have some floristry experience and wish to practise or improve their skills

Learning Goals:
To be able to make a gift and bridal style bouquet To select and prepare suitable fresh flower and foliage materials To experiment with gift wrapping & presentation ideas To be able to identify a range of flowers & foliage by name

What teaching methods will the tutor use?
The tutor will use a range of teaching methods during the course which will include the following: Demonstration - both group and individual, one to one tuition, group work, assessment of progress, observation, discussion / question and answer sessions.

What assessment methods will the tutor use?
The course tutor will use a range of methods to assess progress on the course. These may include: Observation, completion of an Individual Learning Plan which will be updated regularly, evaluation of work samples, question and answer sessions.

Will extra work be required outside the class times?
Extra work is not essential, but will enable learners to practice techniques and progress their projects at a faster pace.

What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
You will need to bring your own flowers & foliage for each session, and the approximate cost will be £20-25 per week, depending on your choice of materials. You will also need a pair of strong scissors with sharp blades. You will be contacted by the course tutor in advance of the start date, with a materials requirements list for the first session. If you have not received this within 3 days of that date, or you enrol just before the start date, please ask for this information when you enrol or contact the Curriculum Leader straight away.

What do I need to bring to the first class?
You will need to bring your own flower materials and scissors- as recommended by the tutor. As this is a practical class, please wear suitable clothing, including fully closed in footwear- you may also wish to wear an apron. Please bring a notebook and pen, plus a phone/camera will be useful for recording design ideas and techniques, and for photographing your work to build a portfolio, if applicable.

Options when finished
The department also offers a wide variety of courses in related areas of Floristry & Balloon Decor, and at different levels from beginners/improvers through to more advanced skills. These can help to build a skills set that can be beneficial if you are considering a career in the industry. Information about all of these courses is available through the Tutor, Curriculum Leader or the Adult Learning Lewisham online programme.

Additional information
The course fee includes a materials charge that covers basic equipment such as gift wrap & other construction sundries, in addition to a small contribution towards demonstration materials that are used in the class. The tutor will advise you of any additional specialist materials that you may need to purchase.
