Stitched textiles techniques - beginners/improvers

In this course you will learn the basic techniques of hand and machine embroidery, including free machine embroidery, using water soluble fabrics, learn how to needle felt by hand and machine, applique and experiment with fabric manipulation, using a variety of threads and yarns. We will explore and experiment creatively through stitch, colour and texture.

What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
This course is designed for learners of all abilities. It is suitable for beginners but basic sewing machine and hand sewing skills would be an advantage.

Learning Goals:
To experiment with a range of hand and machine embroidery stitches, materials and techniques To experiment with a range of materials and techniques. To develop a small portfolio of samples To understand how to use specialist equipment correctly and safely.

What teaching methods will the tutor use?
The tutor will use a range of teaching methods during the course which will include the following: Demonstration - both group and individual, one to one tuition, group work, assessment of progress, observation, discussion / question and answer sessions.

What assessment methods will the tutor use?
The course tutor will use a range of methods to assess progress on the course. These may include: Observation, completion of an Individual Learning Plan which will be updated regularly, evaluation of work samples, question and answer sessions.

Will extra work be required outside the class times?
Extra work is not essential but will enable learners to practice techniques and progress their projects at a faster pace.

What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
A selection of basic materials will be available to you in class but you will need to provide additional materials for your personal project work. These include a basic sewing kit, fabric scraps, machine embroidery threads, yarns and other materials which the Tutor will discuss in the first class. Overall costs involved will be dependent on the size and complexity of your samples and projects. Specialist tools are provided for your use, and advice will be given on where to purchase materials and equipment.

What do I need to bring to the first class?
Please bring your basic sewing kit, to include needles, pins, scissors etc and any threads and/or materials that you have at home that you might like to use. Bring a notebook and pen, plus an A4 wallet or folder would be useful to store samples, notes and handouts. A phone/camera may also be useful to record ideas and techniques.

Options when finished
The department offers a wide variety of fashion and textile courses at different levels. Information about progression courses is available through the tutor, the Curriculum Leader or the online Adult Learning Lewisham programme. There are also a range of courses at a higher level offered across London and the South East by Colleges, Community and Adult Education providers and through local craftspeople. The course fee includes a charge for basic course sampling materials & sundries, and maintenance of tools & equipment.
